Tri-Region High School Round-Up

(By Antonio G. Castillo)

Now that November has come to a close, the tournament action does die down significantly on the basketball court, but we bring you a quick breakdown on how the Tri-Regions fared this past weekend.

(South Texas)

The South San Tournament has become the marquis tournament for Greater San Antonio, and arguably the entire Tri-Regions. Thirty-two teams ascended on the southside of San Antonio and hoops fans got to see plenty of college talent with teams such as Dallas Kimball, Wagner, Dallas Carter, Silsbee, and many more.

San Antonio's own, Wagner High School left no doubt that they are a well oiled machine and routed the competition with the smallest margin of victory being 22 points. In route to their second consecutive South San Tournament championship, they won all five of their contests by an average of 30 points.

Kevin McCullar, Jalen Jackson, Journee Phillips, and other T-birds showed their skills and had plenty of highlights, but it was the 6'5" senior wing DaRaun Clark (Colorado-Colorado Springs Signee) who impressed us the most. He averaged 16ppg, and the ways he did it were eye opening. Finishing strong above the rim, attacking off the dribble from the wings and corners, and showed deep range by consistently hitting from beyond the arc.

Just east of Greater San Antonio in Seguin, the Steele Knights swept their way to four straight wins winning the Matador Classic. The Knights beat Taft, Central Catholic, Pflugerville Connally, and Laredo Nixon on their way to the trophy.

Gerald Lidell (Texas Signee), Langston Love, and Jayden Martinez (New Hampshire) all helped lead the charge and are a big reason why Steele improved to 8-0, and after beating Lehman on Monday, now 9-0.

(Central Texas)

The Jack Frost Invitational took place in Georgetown, Texas, deep in CenTX country. Austin Vandergrift stood above the talented field of 16 teams, and went unblemished finishing 5-0, beating a highly ranked Lake Travis team, 59-53, and super sophomore Greg Brown lit up the Cavaliers for 37pts.

In the championship, the Vipers took care of business against Byron Nelson HS, winning 60-51. Brown was selected as tournament MVP.

(West Texas)

For nearly the last year, our staff has been telling college coaches of Jawaun (2018) and Tristen Newton (2019) of El Paso Burgess. Overlooked strictly because they are in far west Texas, they opened eyes around the State by going 4-1 in the DFW Mansfield Tournament with both Newton's earning All-Tournament selections.

Both played at such a high level with multiple 30+ point games, and even had a 40 piece each, against Fort Worth Dunbar.

Not until they beat College Park, who is led by Kansas Signee and 5 Star blue chip Quentin Grimes, 75-67, did the Newton's finally cement themselves as divison one prospects in the eyes of those who were unaware of their talent in West Texas. Against Grimes, Jawaun finished with 37 points and Tristen poured in 32. College Park started in man to man defense, only to switch to a zone the rest of the game to contain the brothers. In the end, zone or man defense, Burgess prevailed led by the Newton’s who combined for 69 points against College Park.
